Llwydcoed Musical Director Christopher Turner is a leading cornet / trumpet player with over 20 years of playing and teaching experience at the very highest level.
Chris is Professor of Cornet at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, a post he has held for the past 10 years. He has also taught for Rhondda Cynon Taf Music Service, and currently teaches for Gwent Music as well as leading his own thriving company www.onlinebrasslessons.com
Chris has played for some of the world’s leading brass bands, including Black Dyke, Brighouse & Rastrick, Grimethorpe Colliery Band and The Cory Band. He has won all of the major brass band trophies whilst playing with these ensembles, and has a clear understanding of what it takes to excel at all levels of competitive performance.
Chris has taught and performed throughout the world, including residencies in New Zealand, America as well as his native UK. During his residency in New Zealand, Chris played with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and Dalewool Brass Band.
In his formative years, Chris was fortunate to have lessons from two fine brass players and teachers, Andrew George and Tony Small, and enjoyed playing in the various ensembles at West Glamorgan Music Service. He later studied Trumpet at Trinity College, London under Norman Burgess, and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama under John Millar, Paul Cosh and Anne McAneney.
He has also had the benefit of learning from both Dr Nicholas and Dr Robert Childs, and working closely with the renowned soloist and clinician, Dr Roger Webster. Aside from his full-time teaching commitments, Chris has also had extensive experience of delivering masterclasses at home and overseas, including in Ireland and Switzerland.
Chris took up the position of Musical Director at Llwydcoed in January of 2014, since which time the band has enjoyed unprecedented success, winning the Welsh League, National Eisteddfod of Wales, South East Wales and West Wales Brass Band Association, and Wychavon Festival of Brass championship titles.
Having achieved the pinnacle of contest performance, by leading Llwydcoed to qualification to represent Wales at the National Finals of the National Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2021, Chris now looks forward to maintaining and consolidating the band's position in the top three brass bands in Wales, and to now developing the artistic side of the band's performance output through a series of exciting projects over the coming years.
Chris is an Ambassador for Geneva Cornets, playing on the Cardinal Cornet and Symphony Soprano Cornet
